Red Rash with Burning Itch

Red burning itch rash on arm.

Red burning itch rash on arm.

I have had this red burning itch rash for over two years. I got it when I was pregnant and it just won't go away! I have provided some pictures to show the rash on my arm and chest areas. My doctors can't figure this rash out and I never seem to get it when I plan a doctor's visit. I have shown pictures to the doctors but I really need some other help. I have nausea and vomiting many times with this rash and I don't know what is causing this. If anyone can help me I would be so thankful!

For treating this red burning and itchy rash, I have tried Benadryl but unfortunately it doesn't work. I tried steroids but the skin rash always reappears. I also have severe joint pain and muscle pain when the rash appears. I do have fibromyalgia but I really don't think it is related to this health condition.

I'm desperate to know what this is. I hope there is somebody out there that can please help me. I am at the end of my rope because this happens every day. I am in and out of the hospital for nausea and vomiting.

I get this rash on my face, my arms, and my chest as you can see in the pictures that I have provided with this post. I am actually having a rash attack right now. I am so sick to my stomach and I hope someone can please help me!

Please leave a comment to this post with any ideas as to what this skin rash condition could be. I would really appreciate any input.

Thanks.

Had This Same Problem for 25 Years
by: Nikki

I came across this by accident. I am so glad I did. I have had this for 25 years if not more. I also have fibromyalgia and arthritis. This flushing has been driving me mad for so many years. I even get anxious going out with it because people always bring it up. The Doctors had no idea what it was and would always send me away. I have all the symptoms. My daughter has started getting it also. I am going to the doctors to see what they say. Thank you for posting this. I am so grateful.

So glad you figured it out!
by: LB

I am SO relieved you found the answer! I saw your post saying you finally figured out that it was mast cell activation disorder. I have been dealing with this problem for the past year and I am in my early 20s and have been so stressed out by it. PLEASE email me at lodaniel7400@gmail.com so we can discuss more about it because I want all the details about it and want to know what you're doing to treat it, etc. Thanks so much and SO looking forward to hearing from you!

Spray Tan to Hide Red Rash
by: Cat

I also have this rash. It often appears in social situations at the worst times and gets worse when more attention is placed on me. It happens when drinking or smoking weed, exercising or even just chatting. It happens mostly on my cheeks but when it is super bad it happens all over my chest in random patches. The rash is blotchy red and very unattractive.

Do you think getting spray tans would help hide the redness?

REPLYING
by: STARR

Hi Jessica , I did a lot of research on mast cell and saw an allergy doctor and she agreed to treat it as mast cell activation disorder or mast cell activation syndrome!

There are blood test that can be done but sometimes they do not come out but it does not mean you do not have it! My current regiment is Singulair pills, Ranitidine, Benadryl injections every six hours, Atarax, then every over the counter antihistamine that the allergy doctor said I can have! There are times it flares up but it is mostly under control. I don't know if I am able to leave contact info so just google my name Starr Andrews Strong and you will find me.

To the comment of Lyme Disease:
I thought the rash was a bulls eye. Do you have any pictures I could see to compare? I was tested and told it was negative but was also told that could be wrong and that testing is not always right.

Bartonella?
by: Anonymous

I had a tick bite and this type of rash cycles through my body. It is dormant and then it activates. It can be dormant and then something wakes it up. I know this is not very detailed.

Look up Bartonella.

Question about MCAD
by: Jessica

Hi Starr! Did you have specific testing to discover MCAD? Have you found some relief? My rash looks SO similar with the same areas affected such as the face, chest, and arms. I appear as if I am sunburned. It flares up every week.

Similar Issue
by: Anonymous

I started getting a similar rash in the same area when I was pregnant with my first child. I found out afterwards that I have Celiac disease as well as allergies to soy and corn. Immediately after I stopped eating these items it went away. If I accidentally get exposed to any of them then I will break out again for a few days. It feels like I am on fire all over but the rash is only on my chest area as well as my face turns red like a tomato sometimes.

Response to Toni
by: STARR

I agree its my body. I am on fire from the inside out. Almost like my immune system is causing it. No doctor can figure it out and I have tried so hard to get help. If I take a H1 and H2 blocker in very high doses it helps to keep it at bay for a few days but if I forget its hell. It hot to the touch and I get it everywhere. My face, my chest, my arms, my legs, mt feet. If I take a shower it triggers it. I get other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and body pain. My body is on fire from the inside out, it itches it burns. I think it has something to do with POTS Syndrome, or my autonomic nervous system and my body cannot regulate body temperature. I seem to get overheated very easy. Does your heart race when this happens at all? The longer I seem to have it, the more the symptoms get worse and change. You can search me online Starr Andrews Strong HGactivist.

Same Type of Skin Rash
by: Toni

I was on-line looking for answers to my rash as well when I came across your post and pictures! I am getting the same thing and its driving me nuts! I cannot believe they haven't figured out yet what it is. I have come to the conclusion it is coming from inside my body. Nothing has changed as far as laundry soap or anything for me and this has been happening for about nine months now! My skin rash gets really hot when it appears, does yours? Then the itching starts. Mine also started on my chest and now has started to spread when it appears. Good luck to you! I will try to check back here to see if you respond and maybe we can communicate!

THANK YOU LINDA
by: starr

Hi Linda I am going to read up on this thank you. I am still suffering and there has been no light at the end of the tunnel . No one knows what it is they said Lyme was NEGATIVE. I will research this and I thank god he directed you here. I am so sick of this flushing disease. I have been living with it for five years now. I have had high CRP levels when tested while flushing. I would love to talk to you more. If you have FB can you find me? Starr Andrews.

stumbled across your post
by: Anonymous

Hi Starr. I stumbled across your post while trying to find information to help a patient I am working with. She also finds herself in a very frustrating skin situation, but not as bad as what you are describing. Anyway, being a nurse, I know that conventional medicine is often stumped by many medical situations, but there is usually an answer out there somewhere, so don't give up.

I am sharing a link of something I ran across in my search that may or may not be of interest to you. I say, look at everything, it may be worth it in the end.

Praying you find a solution to your situation.

No Diagnosis Yet
by: STARR

I have not had a solid diagnosis as of yet. Doctors are just stupid! I have seen every type of doctor with no luck. I have a friend off line that has the same rash and she ends up having POTS Syndrome and I think it could possibly be that. I know it's been five years and it still has not been figured out. It comes and goes like an autoimmune disease and it seems heat makes it worse. Going from cold to hot my body cannot handle the heat. I often dress cool so that I do not get overheated.

Spontaneous Red Burning Streaks
by: Pari

My 10 year old has something similar. For her the rash is spontaneous red burning streaks all over her body. It is burning to the point that she can't dress up and go to school! We've been in to see a dermatologist, neurologist, rheumatologist, and allergy/immunology doctor. Her tests all came back negative as well.

Her allergy doctor is going to try her on a medication named Ilaris, an interleukin 1 inhibitor. He thinks she might have CAPS disease! However, she doesn't fit the criteria.

When she has red burning streaks, she gets nauseous and has a headache. Her burning red lines spontaneously appear and after 10-30 minutes disappear. Her problem started suddenly on February of 2016 and disappeared after two months and reappeared again on September 6 of 2016 and still continues. So far, nobody knows what's wrong with her!

If you find out something new, please share it with me.

Same Rash

Hi Starr!
Did you ever receive a diagnosis for your rash?
I have had the same kind of rash with joint pain for 9 months. None of lab tests returned with a positive result for anything.

MINE STARTED DURING PREGNANCY AND HAS NOT GONE AWAY. I HAD HG DURING PREGNANCY. IS IT HOT TO THE TOUCH? IF YOU SCRATCH IT, DOES IT APPEARS IN OTHER AREAS? SAME HERE. I HAVE OTHER SYMPTOMS WITH IT LIKE JOINT AND MUSCLE PAIN. ARE YOU SICK AT 35 WEEKS WITH NAUSEA AND VOMITING OR ANY OTHER ISSUES? I BELIEVE IT IS SOME TYPE OF MASS CELL ACTIVATION DISORDER. I HAVE HAD A MILLION TESTS AND CLUELESS DOCTORS BUT I BELIEVE OUR BODIES ARE MAKING TOO MANY MASS CELLS THAT CAUSE THE FLUSHING. TRY TAKING ZANTAC AND ZYRTEC AROUND THE CLOCK WHEN YOU ARE NOT PREGNANT. THOSE ARE H1 AND H2 BLOCKERS THAT HELP STABILIZE THE MASS CELLS. DO YOU GET JOINT AND MUSCLE PAIN?

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME. You can Google starrandrews.com and find my contact info because I am not sure if we are allowed to leave it here.

Red Rash
by: Anonymous

I just starting having this same exact issue. The rash started in the middle of my chest and spread up and underneath my breast. I do not know what it is either. I put some anti-itch cream on it and it made it burn but it did ease the itch. I am 35 weeks pregnant so I am thinking it has to do with pregnancy but I'm not sure. Try to prevent scratching it. Scratching a rash spreads it.

No Clue Yet
by: STARR

I do not know what it is yet. I am still looking and no doctor can figure it out. I was hopeful it was what the other person said about Stills but my Rheumatologist said that it was not likely and so I am back to square one. I posted here a few years back in the hope of getting some answers.

Oh my God, I have the same rash and it has been just over two years and no one knows what it is. It burns, itches and is very red. Have you found out what it is. If you wouldn't mind letting me know what they found out. I am so stressed about it that I haven't worn makeup in two years. I have it on my face arms chest and a little on my legs. Please let me know.

THANK YOU TO THE PERSON WHO SAID IT IS STILLS
by: STARR

I WANT TO THANK THE PERSON THAT MADE THE COMMENT THIS COULD BE ADULT STILLS DISEASE. I THINK YOU FOUND OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME. I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH. THESE PAST FOUR YEARS HAVE BEEN A NIGHTMARE. I AM HOPING THAT I CAN GET A DOCTOR AT KAISER TO SEE IF THIS IS WHAT IT IS. THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME HOPE. NOBODY HAS BEEN ABLE TO FIGURE THIS OUT.

Dec 14, 2014
Thank you for your replies. I still have this.
by: STARR

Hi and thank you for answering. The rash joint pain and nausea plus vomiting is still ongoing. No one can figure this out. I have Kaiser as of December 14 2014. This is ongoing. I read about STILLS and have done gluten-free diets and still have it. Thank you for your comments! I am so happy for answers no matter how old the original thread/post is. I will google the STILLS and see if I have the symptoms.

My doctor and rheumatologists have done a lot of tests on me for many different things and they said it's all negative! The only test they did while having a flare up was CRP which was high but they said everything else was normal! But every time I had a flare up my C reactive proteins were very high.

Gluten Sensitivity
by: Anonymous

Try a gluten free diet for three weeks. Eliminate Gluten completely from your diet and observe the results. The first two weeks eliminate lactose (which is a strong allergen too). If you feel improvement then it is definitely gluten. A friend of mine had the same problem and the same symptoms. The allergy tests came out negative a few times, but she now feels great after eliminating gluten from her daily diet.
Try it, you have nothing to lose. Good luck!

Red Chest Rash
by: Anonymous

I know this thread is older but have any of your doctors done a blood panel for various autoimmune illnesses? There are many. They also are not always easy to detect and narrow down, as a lot of times people will not test positive unless in an active flare. A lot of times too, they overlap.

Also, there is an illness called Adult Onset Stills disease, which is basically the adult version of idiopathic juvenile arthritis.

by: STARR ITS ME MY POST STARR

I hope I answer your questions. I will read up on what you think. I get bad joint muscle or maybe bone pain. The pain with the attacks is unbearable and most of time cycles of nausea and vomiting happen not always but almost always.

Has anyone out there ever seen or know anyone that gets skin flushing where your skin is on fire and hot to the touch like a sunburn but never having been in the sun and clearly not a sunburn. It starts where my body is on fire before it gets red. Afterwards, nausea usually sets in then the red blotching starts spreading up my arm or over my chest and it causes pain in my body where bending my arm or moving it result in muscle and joint pain that feels deep to the bone. It causes a lot of other issues and I have a lot more pictures but I am at my wits end.

I was diagnose with CVS or cyclic vomiting syndrome a long time ago but went into remission untill I got HG while pregnant and this trigger the skin flushing. I thought once my baby was born it would go away but it has only gotten worse and worse. I get so sick and the pain is so unbearable that I feel like someone lit me on fire and added lighter fluid on me. The burning is constant and travels up my body and spreads to my chest, arms, and face.

I can't for the life of me figure out what causes it. I searched Google like crazy all the time but no clue! I have tried trial and error and no luck and I cannot figure this out!

Doctors say they are clueless and it's a mystery to them. I have seen a dermatologist, rheumatologist, G.I. doctor, and my primary doctor and every one of them is clueless even though I have kept extensive journals.

I need help and I am reaching out to Facebook. I have a lot of other symptoms with this condition. Can anyone help me? It has been on going for three and a half years and started when I was pregnant. I thought it was from my Hyperemesis Gravidarum but it's not. I have had a full hysterectomy as of 7/16/14 with everything taken out due to Adenomyosis, so my thought was that it was female issue related.

Reply two answers FROM STARR WHO POSTED THIS
by: STARR

I've seen a rheumatologist and nobody can figure this out. I have Kaiser and every doctor I see is clueless and tells me I'm a mystery! It's starting now first on the left side. My arm feels so hot as if something is burning me. I have it on my left arm and chest and it starts like I am on fire. It's red like a sunburn and that is what people think it is. When I use to go to class I would have people say that's WERID when you first walked in you were not red and I didn't notice you got a sunburn! Where the red and burning is present, I hurt deep inside to the bone. It's a deep ache and the muscles and joints hurt but I am on fire most of the time. This reaction triggers nausea and sometimes the vomiting is non stop. I can't figure what tiggers it! I thought it was female problems but I had a full hysterectomy four weeks ago. I will be 35 years old on 9/11, but this started when I got pregnant. I wasn't suppose to ever be and I suffer from Hyperemesis Gravidarum severely. I am on a home IV line for fluids around the clock and medications. This started when I was pregnant and hasn't gone away and no doctor can figure it out. I am at my wits end.

Psoriatic Arthritis?
by: Anonymous

Since you mention severe joint pain with this rash I would suspect it might be Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA). PsA has a scaly red rash with joint pain. The info does not mention itchiness nor burning however.

Also since you have joint pain with this rash I would bypass your GP and get to a rheumatologist asap. If it is PsA, the information on this condition says early treatment is necessary to prevent irreversible joint damage.

Gluten Intolerance
by: Anonymous

I had a friend of mine who had the same thing. The doctors couldn't figure out what it was. But they finally figured out that he had a gluten intolerance and I believe he had Celiac Disease. I am not doctor but it doesn't hurt to ask.

by: STARR

Yes I am on some MEDS! I have ALOT of health issues. I broke my back in 2002 and was paralyzed and in a coma and I had to learn how to walk, talk, read, and write all over again! I am on pain MEDS and muscle relaxers, birth control and blood pressure/heart rate. All the medications I do take, I have been on for years and years and the rash didn't start until I was pregnant two years ago! I had a really rough pregnancy. I had Hyperemesis Gravidarum, which I threw up to the point of dehydration and malnourishment. I was on home healthcare and had an iv picc line in my arm to do fluids at home and anti nausea MEDS though my iv! I was told I have Gastroparesis from the vomiting in my pregnancy and my vomiting sounds like CVS cyclic vomiting Syndrome. I don't have diabetes but have the Gastroparesis so I don't know if that is causing the vomiting.

I saw an allergy doctor and all my testing was normal. I had no food allergies or other and so I am not sure what's going on but my doctors at Kaiser are clueless and don't know either. I am just at my wits end and want to know what this is.

Are you taking any medication? Vomit and nausea associated with a huge rash is a sign that you may be allergic to some food or medicine.

Update
by: Starr

This is still going on a daily basis! I have debilitating joint and muscle pain and nausea that is so bad that it ends up making me vomit so much that by body gets dehydrated. I have to buy so much Pedialyte in order to try and prevent myself from having to go to the hospital emergency room. I am guessing that whatever is going on with me is rare as nobody has provided an answer for me and this really saddens me.

I have a two year old and it has been so hard to care for her with this pain, rash, and vomiting. I do have Fibromyalgia but I do not think this is causing my issues.

I am hoping someone comes across this post and can help.
