Hives on Face and Antihistamines

by Tara
(Canada)

I am the mother of a 4 year old girl. Who is dealing with dermagraphism. Her face has this red, bumpy rash that will not dissipate. IF she rolls around in the grass, like a 4 year loves to do, she breaks out in hives all over. Those hives do not last as long as the ones on her face. We have been to countless doctors and are always getting the same answers. Now I understand that this disease is not very well understood by doctors.

It seems that the more antihistamine medications she is given the less the antihistamine medications work. Unfortunately, the summer time is the hardest for her. My daughter is always sluggish and warn out during the summer months, but she sure is a trooper. If there is any information you may have for me to be able to help her better please contact me. Thank you.

4 year old with urticaria
by: Anonymous

My son is 4 and has had 5 bouts since the age of 18 months. He is currently in the 5th bout which has been the worst so far. It covers his body and it has been over 2 weeks now. Benadryl and Zantac seem to work for 5 or 6 hours but if we miss a dose or are late he will break out all over again.

When he was 18 months he was mis-diagnosed with Erythema Multiforme Minor and that diagnosis has stuck with him until this bout. Frustrating!

It is frustrating that doctors all have different opinions on the disease. Over this last week we have seen many doctors, all with different opionions. A consensus would be nice. I happen to have a connection that has helped me out, sort of. I work for a doctor who has pulled some strings and got me in with two specialists. Both tell me that it is not worth looking for the trigger. As a distraught mom I have to somewhat disagree. The doctors seem to have given up on finding a reason but that doesn't mean I have to. I am going to look...at least for a little while. Is he going to have this for the rest of his life? I can't even think about it.

18 Month Old Just Diagnosed
by: Worried mother in Ohio

Hello,
I was thankful to come across your story about your 4 year old. My 18 month daughter has just been diagnosed with dermographism and I have been worried about what the future holds for her. Your daughter is the youngest I have come across that has been diagnosed with this. When my daughter breaks out into the hives it really doesn't seem to bother her right now. Her allgerist has put her on two antihistamines but we just started treatment so I'm not sure how it will go. We are staying positive that she might outgrow this. If you could please give me some more information about how you daughter deals with this and how you help her deal with this I would so appreciate it.

Thank you very much.
