Itching Scratching and Welts at Night

by Terri

My husband has these exact dermatographism symptoms but he only gets them at night? He gets itchy then starts scratching and then the welts show up exactly as described - in the shape of scratches where he has scratched? This is the strangest thing. Any input or ideas would be appreciated. Thank you!

There are a number of possible reasons why the dermatographism symptoms only appear at night. First of all it could be the detergent used to wash the bedding and/or any sleepwear. It could be that the bedding including mattress pad needs to be thoroughly washed. The mattress may need to be vacuumed as well. The presence of mites may lead to itching and scratching. Perhaps wrapping the mattress in a vinyl cover sheet might help in this regard.

Another possible reason for the itch, scratching and welts showing up at night is that the body heats up when it is covered. Heat often causes the itch to increase in dermatographism suffers. Keeping the body cooler when in bed might help.

Thirdly, when lying in bed, various parts of the skin are under constant pressure. The pressure on the skin can lead to the itch and then scratching and then welts. There is not much that can be done if this is the cause. Antihistamines can be used to control the symptoms or others try natural treatments to avoid the cost and constant use of anithistamines and their side effects.

Symptoms Start at Night
by: Mike S.

You are so right. It starts as soon as I get into bed and under the sheets and comforter. When it starts on my feet I get from under the sheets and all of itching and welts start to ease up.
