Depressed with Dermographism: Cannot Find a Cause

by Kayla
(United Kingdom)

I have suffered with this for 6 years now. In the beginning I was tested for literally everything and all tests came back clear. I then went to the skin specialist at the hospital and they said dermatographism is what I have. I have been on literally every antihistamine you can think of. They work for a while and then I have to change.

At the moment, I am at the stage where nothing is working and I am so depressed by it. I have to look after my child and work part time and it affects everything I do. All I look forward to is being indoors with literally nothing on so my skin does not get irritated.

My skin does not seem to be as bad during the summer when I can get away with wearing less and not having my heating system on as this seems to really make it worse. I am constantly goggling, trying to find an illness I could have that is causing this so I can be treated but I am getting nowhere with it.

I too have dermographism. My skin doctor told me to check for certain germs in my body. He said, I had Amoeba and Ascaris and I am getting treatment for those. I am now feeling better but not completely cured.

Just Got Dermographism
by: Anonymous

I woke up this morning with my back itchy again and then I see the marks. I was wondering what it was and then I realized I have dermographism. I really hope I can get an effective treatment for this skin condition. I am only 14.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency?
by: Anonymous

You should get your vitamin B12 level checked. I have dermatographism as well and my dermatologist said that it could be related to vitamin B12 deficiency and sure enough mine was very low. If left untreated it can cause permanent damage to the nervous system. My dermatographism has not improved but my other symptoms sure have. I have had this condition since forever and I don't know what it's like not to have I guess in one way I'm lucky. Ignorance is bliss!!

Hi, I haven't been to any doctor yet, but from what I've read, I have this thing, and I'm 16 and had this for about 2 years or maybe more.

I'm not really sure if it is dermatographism, but I believe so, and to be honest, the only thing that I find annoying is when people come and say "hey, your face is red".

It never affected my sleep, do you think I have the same thing?

Dermographism Depression
by: Stacey

I feel exactly the same way. I can't do anything anymore and have gone to a string of doctors. It's affecting my job as I can't focus and I can't sleep as I have to get up every few hours to shower. I've recently had to go off antihistamines as they make me drowsy and I operate machinery at work, and in the meantime waiting for new drugs, I'm going insane. I used to be very active, going to the gym, running and surfing every day, and now all I can do is come home from work and lie in bed waiting for the day to end, hoping tomorrow will be better. I'm 22 years old and I want my life back...

Thank You for Your Dermographism Story
by: Eric

I cried when I read your story... all the emotions and thoughts that where in my head about how I felt with my dermographism condition, you where able to write them all down. The only thing I can say is that we just need to hang in there. There is just nothing else we can do.
