Intense Itchy Skin Rash on Arms and Legs

Intense itchy skin rash on leg.

Intense itchy skin rash on leg.

About almost four years ago I started with a skin rash on my arm. It has since been present on both of my arms, top of hands, upper neck, and currently both forearms and knees. This rash gets produces such an intense itch that I visualize scrubbing my skin with a scrub brush. The heat from the sun or just heat from the air drives it crazy. Hot water also causes the rash to be more irritating than it normally is.

I have had several biopsies done by doctors and the results usually come back favorable to a lupus condition. However it's not actual lupus as the specific fluorescent biopsies never came back positive nor did the blood work. Prednisone creams do nothing to treat the type of skin rash that I have. I have seen several dermatologists and I have even ended up at the mayo clinic, but still nothing.

I have included three pictures of my skin rash problem. Two pictures show the rash on my knee area whereas the other shows the rash on the arm. With these pictures, I hope that someone can help me diagnose my rash and eventually lead me to a successful treatment.

Possibly Gluten Related
by: Anonymous

Look up "dermatitis herpetiformis" and see if it matches. That is what this looks like to me. It is caused by an intolerance to gluten. It is possible that you might have Celiac disease or other kind of intolerance to gluten. Ask your doctor to test you for Celiac.

Same Issue Spreading to Others
by: Taylor

Has it transferred to anyone else close to you? I started having this same issue about four months ago and someone I have been around and sleep in the same bed with has shown signs of it too. But I have been to the doctor many times and the stuff they give me does not work. It helps for a few days but comes back stronger.

Thanks for the post..

Let me know what your biopsy comes back as. Mine always came back favorable to lupus, but the actual lupus biopsy and blood work doesn't show that. I still have that rash on the lower right leg and left knee, but the knee isn't too bad. It stays in that location for like two years now. Maybe one day I will get lucky but I've come to terms that this is my life with it. It is better than taking a bunch of pills that didn't help.

Burning Rash
by: Anonymous

I am also dealing with this "issue". No luck from doctors as to what it is either. One dermatologist told me it was a reaction to using the wrong sunscreen. Another said, I was allergic to medication, but never did an allergen test. Another told me, it was just eczema flair up and if I use those "nonlathering soap products" it would clear up...WRONG! It does feel like something is biting me, which causes me to be compulsive with showering now. I just had a biopsy done today and have my fingers crossed on a fix.

I need help identifying what I might have.
by: Cassandra

I have something on my ARMS/CHEST/STOMACH and LEGS. I then started seeing something on the top of my hands and feet and I believe my face! The dermatologist did a biopsy but she said it doesn't show anything. Can someone please help me?

OUT OF CONTROL RASH
by: Anonymous

This sounds just like my rash and the pictures look just like it (back when it was tolerable). It is out of control now. I have been to one doctor and one dermatologist. (He was vacationing where I worked). The doctor gave me a steroid shot that helped A LOT and ALMOST cleared it up. The doctor made me feel like I was disgusting so I don't want to go back. The Dermatologist prescribed a lotion and it DID NOT WORK...not even a little.

I have had this now for over 10 years! It itches so bad and when I am stressed it itches like fire ant bites. The one thing I have found that helps me get some sleep is a HOT shower. It seems to numb it. I will try to post pictures. I called a new doctor today and I will let you know how it goes.

Burning Itch
by: Anonymous

When you start to feel itchy on your body, cover up the area that turns red and itchy, and heats up with Vicks Vapor Rub. It will take away the burn and itch but sorry to say will not cure your allergy.

I have not had any luck with anything at this point. Do you have pictures? Does yours match mine?

Help!
by: Anonymous

Have you had any luck? I have had the same thing for as long as I can remember. It has just gotten worse and worse though. Right now it's covering my entire body and I can't get into a dermatologist for another three weeks. It itches so bad that I will scratch until I am bleeding everywhere. It's awful! I'm 23 years old and newly married and I just want something to make it go away. Has anything helped since you have posted this?
