Painful Hives After Consuming All Wine Types

by Pat
(Naples, FL, USA)

After researching and trying different foods and drinks, I discovered drinking any kind of wine causes severe hives on my legs and stomach. After consuming one glass of chardonnay, I broke out into 25 hives.

The hives are somewhat itchy but mostly red, hot, and painful. The hives last for roughly a month. I stopped drinking wines, and the hives no longer appear. I can drink other alcohol drinks, but discovered Brandy is made from grapes. I also discovered I can't have Balsamic vinegar.
I don't know if it's a sulfite problem or a histamine problem.

I was told by an Allergist, that I don't have an allergy, but instead, it is a sensitivity. He said all wines have natural sulfites, but said that wine made in France and Germany doesn't have as much sulfites because they don't add additional sulfites. Even if you buy organic wines, they all have sulfites. However, some wines claim they don't add additional sulfites.

I hope this information is helpful. I will now be trying wine filters, drops, or wine bags to filter the wine, which removes sulfites and histamines. God only knows what is in those!

HIves and Wine

I also have a hives problem when drinking wine and some types of alcohol but it does not happen all the time. It appears to be a combination of wine with some other food (or something else). If the combination is present I get severe hives that last for a couple of hours. If the combination is not present, no hives at all. It is very difficult to figure out a cause.
