Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Dermatographism

by Chandelle

I have suffered with dermatographism as long as I can remember and my doctor always told me that it was due to receptor cells being too close to the surface of my skin. In my late twenties I decided to go see a dermatologist and she told me that it could be related to a vitamin B12 deficiency. She sent me for some bloodwork and sure enough it was low enough for her to call me at work to give me the results. I was unfortunately experiencing other side effects of the deficiency i.e. balance, memory, emotions, and proprioception problems especially where the various parts of the body are located in relation to each other. Since taking supplements all but my memory have corrected and I have been told that with time it will improve. I feel everyone with dermatographism should be checked for this deficiency because it effects every part of your life. I feel like a new woman.

Dermatographism
by: Chandelle

Hi Michelle,

I take Vitamin B12 1000mcg every day. I have noticed improvement with symptoms of B12 deficiency but not dermatographism. For a while I was taking allergy medications to prevent itching and welting but did not notice an improvement so I stopped taking them.

I highly recommend that you have some blood work to test your B12 levels because if not treated can have permanent neurological damage. I don't believe that it is the main cause of this condition but can play a role in it's development.

I have had this condition ever since I was a child so I am used to it's symptoms. Have you had it since you were a child or have you developed it over the years? I hope that all works out with you and you feel comfortable in your skin :D

Hi Chandelle.

I was googling Dermographism in Nova Scotia and came across your post. I am from Sydney, living in Halifax, and have reached my limit for dealing with this condition. I want it cured/gone. I want to stop taking drugs every day, fearful that if I stop it all comes back.

I would love to hear what you did about the B12 deficiency. Did you take supplements? How long before you noticed a difference? Did you have any other allergies.

A fellow sufferer,
Michelle
