Dermographism Diagnosis and Remedies

by Ricky
(Michigan)

I have noticed that my skin swells and becomes whitish after I simply apply pressure, rub against something, or if something scratches my skin. The most common areas affected are my back, stomach, face, chest, and buttocks. The areas are very itchy and uncomfortable. Do I have dermographism? What can I do to settle the problem down? It is such a bother.

Dermographism leads to raised red skin appearing where pressure was applied to the skin. If you can draw or write something on your skin with a blunt object and that drawing appears as red raised skin, then you likely have dermographism.

From your description, it sounds like dermographism, although you mention whitish skin. Usually, it is red, and so I am not 100% sure about the diagnosis. If you feel it might be something else, a visit with the doctor should confirm whether you have this skin problem or not. Sometimes physicians have not heard about this problem or have no experience with it and so if you do see a doctor, mention that you suspect it is dermographism.

Dermographism Skin Condition Remedies

by Maggie
(England)

What is the best treatment for this condition? And what is the best recommended skin lotion for this condition? I have this severely.

There are several treatment options to help alleviate the symptoms of dermographism. Most have to do with taking antihistamines. The proper antihistmanine(s) and dosage for you is determined by carefully monitoring of how your body is reacting to the medication. This is done under the supervision of a physician.

More information on the treatment of this skin condition can be found at the dermatographism page.

Dermographism and Calamine Lotion

by Anonymous

Can calamine lotion be used as a dermatographism remedy? Is cornstarch helpful?

If these substances help relieve the symptoms, then they can be used.

Xyzal Alternative for Dermographism Treatment

by Katherine
(Chicago, IL U.S.)

I have been living with dermatographic urticaria for over three years. My only relief has been taking Xyzal on a daily basis, sometimes up to 15mg per day. In the U.S. Xyzal costs a fortune and online a 90-day prescription is still $90 U.S. I would love a diagnosis, not just a treatment bandaid. After multiple visits to dermatologists and allergists, maybe I should visit a rheumatologist. Your thoughts?

I think you should find the best method to treat your symptoms. There is no treatment that works the same for all. Unfortunately, there is no cure and a "treatment bandaid" is really all we have right now until this skin condition is better understood. Reading through the various stories on this website you will find some dermatographism remedies that have worked for some people but by no means are these universal cures.

Antibiotics as a Dermatographism Remedy

by Anonymous

Hello fellow dermatographism sufferers.

What is this disease? I have started experiencing this in the last couple of months. I am a healthcare worker and wonder if it is something in my environment that is causing this. I have taken care of patients that have necrotizing facitis and I worry that something is going on with my immune system. I get this itching that comes and goes and it could be on my extremities, trunk, buttocks, and sometimes I even get this warm itching sensation in my anal area. From what I see in the hospital, I get very worried about scratching because I don't want to pass bacteria through my skin. Can antibiotics cure this or will I suffer with this for the rest of my life? I am also straight and married, no extramarital partners.

In brief, there is no cure. You may have it for the rest of your life, it may periodically subside, or it may disappear altogether. Sorry, no firm answer to that question. The usual course of treatment involves the use of different antihistamine dosages and types. Although antibiotics may cure some underlying infection that may have started the dermographism problem, they are not generally considered a treatment for this skin problem.

Natural Remedy
by: Lori Australia March 2013

I was diagnosed by a skin specialist two months ago with having Dermographism which also caused an Eczema rash that covered my trunk, arms, scalp and bottom. I would scratch all day, however night time was unbearable especially with my scalp. Using Diprosone Lotion 0.05% (prescription) within three days the itch was completely gone and has not returned. I was also using QV Skin Lotion over the affected areas of my body and then applied Celestone ointment (prescription) over the skin lotion three times a day. Daily I would also take one Telfast tablet (being an antihistamine).

For my evening shower, I would use QV Gentle Wash then apply skin lotion and Celestone ointment over the lotion. Soaking in QV Bath Oil on alternate nights was a great relief also, then applying th lotion and Celestone ointment.

Within two weeks all my rash and itching disappeared. Unfortunately the itch returned to my forearms and I decided to cut a piece of my Aloe plant and rub on the affected area twice a day however I did bandage my arms at night time. Within 24 hours the itch and rash was completely GONE. I did continue my Aloe treatment for a few more days even though there was no itch or marks to be seen. I am now completely clear of all rashes and itches.

If the itch or rash do return on any part of my body I am going to try using the juice from the Aloe plant only as it was totally unbelievable how it worked on my arms.

No Relief From Hives Skin Condition

by Anonymous

I have had this condition for almost two years and the hives get so bad. I have been taking Zyrtec everyday also Benadryl when its very bad. I can't brush my hair with a comb, or put makeup on. Any touch or rub against my skin and I break out. Even when I shower! The doctor says that I can't do anything!

Very Frustrated.

No Relief From Hives Skin Condition
by: Christie

I had to hit all my histamine receptors to get any relief. There are histamine receptors in our gut and our bronchial airways. They also now know we have histamine receptors in our brain too. Unfortunately there's currently no antihistamine that targets histamine receptors in the brain although low dose Doxepin, which is a tricyclate antidepressant, seems to help some people. It's given at a very low dose... much lower than for depression. I can't tolerate the Doxepin, even at a low dose, but most people can.

What helps me is taking Zyrtec 10mg, Zantac 150mg twice daily, Singulair 10mg. Singulair is a prescription (as is Doxepin), the other medications are over the counter. For me this totally controls my hives. I've had this condition for over 20 years and this is the only medication(s) that have completely controlled my dermatographism.

I hope you find this information helps, and that you can find what works for you.
