The use of lip plumpers is very important for many women. This is because the lips are an important facial feature. Healthy, robust, and full lips convey attractiveness and beauty. Unfortunately, as people age, the plump attractive lips that once existed are no longer present. Therefore, it is not surprising that many women seek out lip treatments to help increase their attractiveness.

Lip augmentation is an option for those who are willing to undergo invasive lip treatments to reverse the signs of aging. Lip augmentation is a lip treatment that improves deflated, drooping or sagging lips. It can also be used to correct symmetry problems with the lips and reduce fine lines and wrinkles on and around them. This is achieved by using lip plumpers.

Lip augmentation treatments can be divided into two main categories: injection lip treatments and implant lip treatments.

Injection Lip Plumpers

(For related information on lip plumpers, see the botox alternatives page.)

For injection lip treatments, lip plumpers are injected into the lips of the patient. The surgeon uses topical anesthesia on the lips to reduce the pain caused by the injection. The treatment is normally performed on an outpatient basis. A couple of days of recovery time are usually enough. Swelling and bruising may last a bit longer.

There are a variety of options available such as:

Artecoll

This is a synthetic material that is used to plump up the lips. Allergic reactions are possible, but such lip treatments are longer lasting that collagen or fat treatments.

Autologen

Autologen is an injection of the patient’s own collagen that was extracted from a different area of the body. There is no risk of an allergic reaction and results are temporary.

Collagen

The collagen used in this procedure is extracted from cattle. The collagen is purified and injected into the lips. Allergic reactions are a possibility and therefore, spot testing is necessary before the full treatment is performed. Results generally last from one to three months.

Dermalogen

Dermalogen is collagen extracted from deceased human donors. It is a temporary procedure with little side effects.

Fat

For this lip treatment, fat from the thighs or abdomen of the individual is extracted and injected into the lips. There's no risk of allergic reaction and near permanent results can be achieved.

HylaForm

This is another in the class of lip treatments that uses a material created from natural body substances. Repeated treatments are necessary in order to maintain the results since the benefits are only short term.

Restylane

Restylane injections contain a clear gel with hyaluronic acid as an ingredient. Because this substance is present naturally in humans, allergic reactions are rare. Treatments will only last a maximum of six months.

Implants

Lip enhancers can also be in the form of implants. In this case the surgeon will use local anesthesia for the procedure, which could take up to two hours. For more complex procedures, a hospital stay may be required, but generally these lip treatments can be performed on an outpatient basis. Two weeks is the average recovery time for such lip treatments.

The options available are:

Alloderm

This is a sheet of collagen created from deceased humans. These sheets are inserted into the lips through tiny incisions made from the inside part of the lip. The positive results from this procedure can last for 12 months.

Fat Grafting

This lip treatment is similar to the injected fat treatment, but is a more extensive procedure.

Gore-Tex, SoftForm and Soft ePTFE

These lip enhancers involve the use of synthetic materials. Permanent results are possible because the materials are synthetic and not reabsorbed by the body over time. Allergic reactions to these types of plumpers for lips are possible.

Laser Lip Rejuvenation

In addition to the use of the different types of plumpers, laser lip rejuvenation is an option. This lip treatment tightens the collagen and elastin beneath the lips without the use of lip plumpers. The advantage of this procedure is a short recovery time and it is non-invasive.
